Dr. Highman and the surgical team pride themselves in their friendly, efficient and prompt evaluation and treatment of all patients. They also place prevention of surgical site infections as a high priority. Colusa Medical Center follows the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) procedures identified by state law for ongoing surveillance of surgical site infections. They believe that infections can be reduced through the identification and prevention of risk factors. Colusa Medical Center evaluates procedures, policies and practices, looking for preventable risk factors, when infection trends are identified.
Dr. Highman received his medical degree from University of Illinois. He began practicing in Colusa after he completed his Internship and Residency at University of Illinois and Cleveland Clinic in 1979. Dr. Highman has been in practice at Colusa Medical Center since 2004.

As the daughter of a general practice physician and a nurse who both loved caring for patients, I found medicine a natural choice. As a child, I was challenged to appropriately answer the patient’s phone calls and take accurate messages when my parents weren’t available. Although I was unable to spell things like penicillin, I gave my parents some amusement with my phonetic spellings. At least they knew what the message meant. During my teenage summers, I enjoyed being able to put in some time as an office assistant.

Surgical rotations in medical school helped me realize how much I enjoyed the operating room, ICU, and the way my surgical mentors cared for their patients, both in the office and in the hospital.  The operative part of surgical practice is a privilege and never gets old, but the office and hospital practice outside the OR touches my heart.

I enjoy nature, animals, hiking, camping, music, cooking, and spending time with loved ones.
